EUCHARISTIC REVERENCE
Canon 898 says….”Christ’s faithful are to hold the blessed Eucharist in the highest honour. They should take an active part in the celebration of the most august Sacrifice; they should receive the sacrament with great devotion and frequently and should reverence it with the greatest adoration. In explaining the doctrine of this sacrament, pastors of souls are assiduously to instruct the faithful about their obligation in this regard.” Last week a parishioner was shocked and distressed to discover a sacred host crumbled and discarded under a pew. We hold many events apart from daily and week-end Masses at which we welcome those who share little of our sacramental beliefs and who in a moment of confusion might present themselves for ‘communion’ and then be tempted to put the host aside. Of course we must always make our non-Catholic friends very welcome to join with us but should, as I frequently say, encourage them to present themselves for a blessing rather than reception of holy communion which might lead to discarding and desecrating the host . As a foot-note we must remember that as our children grow up they come under increasingly secular influences and so we must do all we can to talk with them when doubts arise in order to help them continue to respect and reverence the Lord in holy Communion. Fr John
